What is Influencer Marketing?

Influencer marketing is a partnership between a business and an influencer. It’s a marketing strategy used to increase brand awareness through word of mouth advertising.

What is an influencer?

An influencer is a person considered an expert in their niche. This niche can be things like food, makeup, travel, fashion, or a particular city/area they know very well.

The influencer uses their social media platform to achieve two main goals:

1) Promote brand awareness

2) Increase sales revenue

Influencer marketing is a 6.5 billion dollar industry. Yep, you read that right. BILLION. And it’s growing rapidly with no plans of slowing down anytime soon.

The evolution of influencer marketing

Most associate the word “influencer” with celebrities like Kylie Jenner and Selena Gomez. But as social media evolves, so does influencer marketing.

People are becoming more skeptical of celebrity endorsements and paid partnerships. Many know these influencers are making upwards of $50k a post.

I’m not going to lie, I might pretend some magical protein shake gave me a killer bod for that kind of dough, too.

Because of this, businesses are beginning to work with not just celebrities but all different types of influencers to promote their brands.

Types of Influencers

Celebrity Influencer (over 1 million followers)

Celebrity influencers are useful for enterprise brands with budgets big enough to pay for their endorsement. Geographic location doesn’t matter. These are the Kardashians of the influencer world and use their large following to make the big bucks through paid partnerships with big brands.

Macro-Influencer (over 100,000 followers)

Macro-influencers are celebrity influencers on a slightly smaller scale. They’re useful for companies growing into an enterprise brand, but who don’t quite have the budget for celebrity endorsement just yet. Geography doesn’t matter for macro-influencers either. They have followers all over the country and often around the world.

Micro-Influencer (over 5,000 followers)

Micro-influencers tend to engage more with their followers than celebrity and macro-influencers. They also will have a lower rate per post that is more reasonable for smaller businesses. Geographic location still doesn’t matter though because those 5,000+ followers are most likely spread across the country or world.

Local Influencer (over 50 followers)

Local influencers are ideal for businesses in the local area. Their followers will most likely consist of people they know personally. Their engagement ratio is high and people take their recommendations seriously.

It’s the ideal form of influencer marketing for small business owners and becoming the most effective all-around.
